BEING BRAVE

Dear Cosmo,

Well, it happened. Juice Box got croup again. And just like always, it struck late at night, waking all of us up.

My mom did the tricks she always tried at home to help Juice Box breathe: running a hot shower to steam up the bathroom, sticking his head into the freezer, trying to get him to take deep breaths. But none of it worked, so it was off to the emergency room.

As we were leaving, my dad said this weird thing to my mom.

Mom didn’t fool me. There was no big cake. I would have noticed the baking supplies in the cupboard.

This reminded me of the time Mom let me wear her favorite hat to our town’s swimming pool, and I lost it. I didn’t want to tell her I lost her hat, though, because she’d made me promise over and over that I wouldn’t leave the hat behind.
